Dr. Maryam Nik, HBSc, DC, RMT, ART certified
Dr. Maryam Nik is the owner and clinic director of Active-Med Health and Wellness Centre. In 2002, she graduated from University of Toronto with a bachelor degree in Neuroscience. She graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College Magna Cum Laude in 2006.
Throughout her internship of her chiropractic program Dr. Nik worked at Bioped Foot Care Clinics assessing patients with biomechanical conditions in their feet, recommending treatment protocols to address these abnormalities. It was then when she completed the required hours to obtain her C.Ped Tech certification, which allowed her to make custom-made orthotics, and modified orthopedic shoes in the on-site lab.
Soon after graduating from CMCC, Dr. Nik started building her wellness practice in Oak Ridges while working in a chronic pain clinic treating patients under a medical doctor’s supervision. It was during this time period that Dr. Nik realized the importance of preventative care and the multi-disciplinary approach to healthcare specifically musculo-skeletal conditions.
Dr. Nik’s focus is to assist her patients and their families to achieve the fastest recovery from injuries to prevent chronic pain and to help them maintain a high quality of life through incorporating permanent healthy life style changes.
Dr. Nik believes that continued education and staying up to date with the relevant research is neccessary for providing the best and top of the line service to her patients and that is the reason she dedicates a lot of her time to learn new technqiues and protocols. Dr. Nik is full body Active Release Technique certified and continues to invest more time to learn each day by attending new seminars.
Dr. Nik has been blessed with a great husband and two healthy boys and she is reminded every day how lucky she is and the importance of our life style choices in keeping our families safe. She truly believes in the benefits of chiropractic care, regular exercise and a balanced diet and looks forward to helping others optimize their health through Chiropractic and permanent life style changes.
Rita Mustafa Acup, RNCP (Holistic Nutritionist and Acupuncturist),
Rita is a Holistic Nutritionist and a Registered Acupuncturist who specializes in custom tailoring treatments specific to each individual's unique body chemistry.
Her emphasis is on correcting nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, through dietary and liftstyle changes and acupuncture to restore balance to the body.
Rita is a graduate from Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and the Ontario College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Rita's years of experience in the health and fitness coupled with her educational background and ongoing activities, have inspired her to bring a comprehensive, combined approach to her practice as a Holistic Practitioner.
MK Murugesan (Registered Physiotherapist)
Muthu Kumar Murugesan is a Registered Physiotherapist working at Active-Med Health and Wellness Centre helping patients achieve fast recovery from their sports and musculoskeletal injuries. He specializes in post-operation, post-fracture and chronic pain rehabilitation. He has extensive experience in the field of Therapeutic Exercise, Personal Training and Strength & Conditioning with various age groups and fitness levels.
Through physical examination and muscle testing, MK develops focused treatment plans for each patient to reach maximum medical benefit and prevent reoccurrence of further injuries. He uses a broad spectrum of techniques including manual and soft-tissue therapy, customized exercise programs, physiotherapy modalities and injury prevention strategies to help relieve pain and augment function.
MK is passionate about the difference he makes in his patients lives. In his spare time, he works with the Ontario Junior Blues Rugby Team working on their strength and conditioning to get them ready for the summer games. He also participates in multiple charitable events along with the Active-Med Team!
Hourzad Salehi (Registered Psychotherapist)
As a Registered Psychotherapist and Certified Counselor, Hourzad specializes in helping those who experience depression, anxiety, work stress, low self-esteem, child/adolescent issues, marital concerns, relationship concerns, memory issues or issues with the career decision-making process and many other problems. She welcomes families, couples and individuals who would benefit from working out their concerns in a safe, nonjudgmental and confidential environment.
With over a decade of providing psychotherapy, She has gained considerable experience in interdisciplinary physical rehabilitation too. She has expertise in helping individuals to learn in the aftermath of serious injuries (particularly car accidents) to self-manage chronic, painful conditions and regain an improved quality of life. She addresses a wide range of general mental health issues in her practice including depression / grief, anxiety / PTSD, ADHD, OCD and stress-related concerns.
Currently, Hourzad divides her time between her private practice where she consults with people who have a variety of social and psychological problems, and with several multidisciplinary physical rehabilitation teams, where she works with individuals experiencing complex and persisting pain and psychological issues.
Simorrah Colaco (Office Manager and Psychotherapist)
I have been in the MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident) for over 10 years now. I graduated with a degree in Psychology from York University before pursuing my Masters of Science in Psychology in London, England. In the past I was the Clinic Service Coordinator and the Manager/Coordinator of the Psychology Department at a rehab centre and worked as Physician's assistant performing chronic pain assessments along with a Physiotherapist. I also worked as an Office Manager for two psychologists; aiding in student learning disability assessments. Since obtaining my Masters in 2011,I have become registered member of the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometricts, and Psychotherapists (OACCPP). I perform CBT (cognitive behavioral technique), along with various other interventions, privately for patients in an array of emotional states and ages. My areas of interest include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, phobias (specifically driving phobias), relationship related concerns, general family counselling, and other individual specific areas of concern.
Dr. Vanessa Ling, H.BSc., ND (Naturopathic Doctor)
Vanessa Ling is a board-certified and licensed naturopathic doctor who enjoys working with motivated individuals get on the path to their best health. After earning her H.BSc. from McMaster University, Vanessa followed her passion for sustainable health solutions at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine to optimize the health and wellness of each of her patients.
Vanessa employs results-oriented treatment plans tailored to your individual health needs. Her interests range from hormonal health and fertility to pain and chronic disease management. Adam Hartsman DOMP, BScHK, NANS (Manual Osteopath)
Adam is a registered Osteopathic practitioner who follows the principle that the structure and functions of the body are closely integrated. While pursuing his Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Kinesiology and another in Nutrition, he discovered that he had an even deeper passion for total body health and wellbeing. He then began to study and practice Osteopathy with the intention of applying his years of knowledge into helping people relieve and manage their pain.
He now specializes in Osteopathy. Osteopathy is a gentle and effective holistic treatment. It involves skilled palpation and manual techniques which are used to treat the body’s joints, ligaments, bones and muscles.
